Abnegation- The Selfless. Provides us with selfless leaders in government (Roth 43)
Appearance- Long, baggy gray clothing. Very conservative
Traits- Selfless, never drawing attention to themselves, caring. Others may see as difficult to get to know
The Abnegation believe the world would be a better place if everyone wasn't so selfish. They never want to draw attention to themselves and just want to help out others. For example, Beatrice Prior was born into the Abnegation faction. She was never allowed to look at herself in the mirror for a long time because they see it as boosting your ego. They have plain and simple hairstyles, and an extremely bland sense of style. They find joy in helping out others. They are not supposed to be curious about anything and ask questions. Beatrice stated in the book that she never saw her parents kiss, only hold hands.

who are the abnegation's in today's society?
In today's society, people that would fit into the Abnegation faction would be nuns, monks, amish and mennonites. Nuns are very conservative and dress in plain black and white clothing, that only show their faces most of the time. Most nuns live a very simple life, spending their time devoted to religion and helping others. Nuns have the jobs of helping the poor, working in foster homes, or even working as a nurse. Being in Lebanon, PA, we do see a good amount of amish and mennonites. They are very conservative, but some do find the time to have fun, compared Abnegation that are not allowed to have any self enjoyment, only strictly helping others.
