The Factionless are ultimately people stuck doing the jobs that most people do not want to do. In the book, they are poor, doing jobs such as being janitors, factory workers, and other low paying jobs. During faction initiation, they are told that being factionless is worse than death. Surprisingly, most Divergent are found in these compounds because of the fear of being caught and killed. They are mostly paid with food and clothing and live in the worst parts of Chicago possible.
In today's society, we do have people that under certain circumstances are only able to work low income jobs. The circumstances could be that they are not able to have a good paying job because they could have possibly committed a crime that most jobs will not hire because of. Also, they could have grown up not having much and not getting any type of education, meaning that the only thing they can do is just work as a janitor, bus driver, etc. In today's society we also have homeless shelters to help those people by giving them food and new clothing, which would be considered an abnegation act, caring for the factionless.
