In the book Divergent, when you turn 16, you are required to take an Aptitude test. The test administrator will administer a serum, which makes you fall asleep and then start hallucinating. Also, in the picture to the left, it shows Beatrice Prior being hooked up to electrodes, which are connected to a computer. The purpose of the electrodes are to connect the student to the computer, so the test administrator can see what is going on in their mind and how they are reacting to the situations they are being put into. The test administrator monitors the stimulations, and eliminates factions that the teenager did not test for, ultimately leaving them with only one faction result left. In the case of being a Divergent, they test for more one faction rather then just resulting with only one faction that suites them best. There is no way to prepare students for the Aptitude testing at all.
Examples of what happens during the Aptitude Test:
- You are asked to pick either a knife, or piece of cheese. (14)
-After you pick one of the two, a dog appears that is growling at you, and it is up to you do what you think is best.(14)
- An angry man on a bus approaches you, asking if you know a man that is missing in a newspaper. He looks familiar, but you have to decide whether you know him or not. (14)

SAT/ACT tests in general are supposed to be taken to show a student's score based on the "education background" that they have. The SAT college board states that the tests tests measure a students verbal reasoning, critical reading, and skills (SAT). It is their to show their mastery in certain subjects. In my own opinion, the SAT tests are not as effective because it is only testing on academic skills. Yes, these tests are there to help a student have a better chance getting into the college that they want to, if they receive the right score that the college would admit a student in at. There are many negative factors that can make a student's score not as well as another student on the SAT test. A student whose family has money could be paying for the SAT workshops and hiring tutors to give their child the best preparation that they can before the test. A student that does not come from a family with money may receive good grades in school, but when it comes to the SAT exam they might not have been as well prepared because of not being able to afford the proper preparation that other students can afford. In my opinion, it is more important to pursue an academic passion, get a job, and maybe taking a test that is related to the subject that a student actually wants to study in. A student could be extremely well at math, but because of a low reading and writing score, that can affect the whole admissions part of getting into a school. SAT testing is also timed, which can cause a slow reader but critical thinker to not have enough time to read a passage thoroughly to understand it. For more information on the SAT's, click here.
"Subject Tests are hour-long, content-based tests that allow you to showcase achievement in specific subject areas where you excel. These are the only national admission tests where you choose the tests that best showcase your achievements and interests." -SAT College Board
The idea of the SAT Subject Tests are more reasonable for a student to take before entering college. These tests can put you ahead of others, showing that you are more prepared in a math or science field, and really allows admissions to see that a student really excels in a certain subject. The idea of this subject testing is so much more reasonable, because it allows to show the strengths of the students, instead of denying a student from going to a school just because of a low score on a test, for something they are not even going to pursue knowledge in according to their career path. The Aptitude Testing and SAT testing are somewhat similar in a few ways. First off, the Aptitude testing allows a student to know what personal traits they have according to the faction that they were scored as. Knowing what faction you are scored as helps a student make up their mind, because when they choose a faction, they are permitted to serve in that faction for the rest of their lives. It would be very hard for a student to just choose a faction without the Aptitude testing because they have to serve this faction for the rest of their lives. If they decide that the faction that they have chosen is not for them, then they then become Factionless, meaning that they are basically homeless, with no job, and living on their own with the other factionless members. The SAT testing relates to this because it is showing students their strengths and weaknesses on a test, knowing that if they maybe scored really bad on the math portion, they should not be going to school for wanting to be an accountant or math teacher. Also, SAT tests are taken to ultimately prepare for which college a student would like to attend. A student has the choice to either take the SAT test to get into a college, to fit in with other students in the major of their choice, or to stay at home with their family.
