Now, the Divergent. The Divergent are the ones who test for more than one faction. They have the tendency to leave the norm, from which is seen as the mindset and way of things in this society. For example, Beatrice Prior tested for Abnegation, Dauntless, and Erudite. Her tests results were then, inconclusive. She was not given a faction that she should pick because being Divergent is not so much of a good thing. Beatrice is brave, selfless, and smart, which makes sense in all of these books. She is able to fight and be brave when she needs to. For example, she volunteers herself when she first becomes a Dauntless to jump off of a ledge into a deep hole where she did not know what was at the bottom. She also ends up fighting Jenaine Matthew's, the Erudite leader, when she figures out the plan to kill all of the Abnegation faction. She is able to help out others and stand up for them. For example, Al is the weakest link in the Dauntless faction, and was forced to stand in front of a dart board. The Dauntless leader would then throw knives at him and if he were to flinch, then he would become factionless. Beatrice, now known as Tris in the Dauntless faction, knows that Al would fail. She decided to volunteer herself and was able to be brave enough to have darts thrown at her by the Dauntless leader. Beatrice is smart by being able to figure out how other's work and think. She knows that she needs to erase all of the data from the simulations, because the Erudite faction relies on their data, and that will hurt them more than anything. Those who are Divergent are seen as a threat, and need to be killed. Because they seem so "perfect" and able to handle any situation, the Erudite faction does not want them taking over. The divergent's mind's cannot be controlled, or just have one certain way of thinking. In this society, you are raised in the faction you are born into. You are taught how to view yourself, society and life just as how the faction does that you are born into. This does relate to our society because you are born into a family that could be extremely religious or strict. A family can raise a child to strictly believe in God and live by God, but when they are 18, they are legally an adult and able to do what they want in life. They can go on and decide to not raise their kids to believe in God, or simply carry on that family tradition.
so, who is divergent in today's society?
Everyone in today's society could be considered divergent. Just because you are born into a family that may view things one way, does not limit your way to view things religiously, politically, or morally. No one is ultimately entitled to just one specific personality. I think that Divergent's are those who are differing from the normal, and those who find a voice and are not afraid to use it. Divergent's are overall out of the ordinary and different. They are able to think and see things in other perspectives, and not just the one that they were taught and born into. Being out of the ordinary and different is something people should be more often. People are so conformed to society norms and the ways that families raise them, and sometimes that is okay. But for those who are able to find their own voice, do what's right, and be able to make smart decisions on their own are those who I would consider Divergent.
